I live in a city where sweeping views of Lake Superior are constant. This place is bowled over with giant, steep hills and large, glorious stretches of natural, tree and creek-saturated spans. The big stuff is certainly beautiful, but what a pity to forget the small treasures! Take a closer look at certain times of year and you will find micro gems like these smelt–-tiny little fish that swim to Lake Superior's shore for a week or so each April. They're snagged with large nets and fried whole. And in Duluth, you can even catch a Magic Smelt parade where we celebrate the arrival of these guys in all their silvery beauty.
