Tofte, Minnesota....
.... A place built by Norwegian immigrants, lies along the Minnesota north shore of Lake Superior roughly seventy miles from the Canadian border. Founded in 1893 by Hans Engelsen and his brother Torger along with twin bothers Andrew and John Tofte and their sister Johanna, Tofte, Minnesota was named for the Norwegian village they originally called home. In these pages, Brian and Terry Tofte - grandsons of Andrew Tofte - weave together the community's rich history: how the Tofte brothers and other immigrants from their home village established fisheries, farms, and logging operations despite facing many challenges including dangerous seas and uncontrollable forest fires. Along the way they built homes, a school, and a church, forming the town's social center. As commercial fishing and logging eventually played out, the town's economy shifted to tourism, a change supported by improved roads and bridges that made a drive along Minnesota' North Shore one of the nation's most iconic scenic road trips.
