Back in early April of this year, days after the devastating fire that destroyed The Crooked Spoon Cafe, Picnic & Pine and White Pine North, I reached out to my friend Jordan Sundberg to see if she would create an image to commemorate these incredible businesses. A print to be sold as a fundraiser for the families behind each storefront and cafe. I knew she was the perfect choice to capture their unique and definite presence in a print. Not only did Jordan say yes, she offered her talents as a gift to the fundraiser. No charge whatsoever. She (and this print) is so incredibly wonderful.

When these beautiful prints arrived at The Big Lake’s doorstep, it was just days after the murder of George Floyd and the riots in Minneapolis, in which countless small businesses and non-profits were also lost in devastating fires. Wow. SO MUCH has changed since early April. One of these organizations whose building was lost to fire in May was MIGIZI. Migizi is a non-profit organization that works to create a strong, supportive and nurturing space for Native American youth to develop and unleash their creativity, desires and dreams.

Acknowledging that Grand Marais, including the land where these three amazing businesses once stood, are located on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Anishinaabe people, donating to Migizi feels like the natural and appropriate choice for extension of support by our Big Lake community.

100% of profits generated by “Good Night Grand Marais” will be split equally between the Grand Marais Fire Relief Fund and Migizi in Minneapolis. We have a limited number of prints available, but should the demand be there, we will run more to accommodate. If you are not interested in purchasing this print, I implore you to look into Migizi’s mission and vision and consider donating directly to their organization.

Miigwech to Staci Drouillard for your guidance in the language used in this post and for all the work you do to help others understand, hear and honor the stories and history of the Anishinaabe people.
