Meet Katie!

Katie has been with us at The Big Lake in some way or another for years. First, as a customer. Second, as an artist (yes, she is THAT Katie Mumm, the wildlife photographer) and now a member of our sales team! Katie is the youngest on our team and is definitely the hippest. It has been a blast having Miss Mumm around the shop.

When Katie isn’t at TBL smelling all the candles or teaching me the ways of Instagram filters, she is hanging out with her adorable pup Annie or up the Gunflint Trail searching for moose, fox and other animals to photograph (always with her Java Moose mug). Katie also runs @GrandMaraisMN (along with me!), @Kemofthenorth and @gunflint.trail which is the official Gunflint Trail Instagram. She is one busy, creative and hella fun gal.

Tell us a little bit about yourself! How did you find yourself on The North Shore?

My name is Katie Mumm and I have lived in Grand Marais for almost 4 years now. I moved here to follow a lifelong dream of living on the Gunflint Trail and working at Bearskin Lodge. My grandparents first visited Bearskin on their honeymoon 60+ years ago and my family has been going there ever since. This past year I moved closer to town and being closer to Lake Superior is amazing. I feel so lucky every single day.

What is your favorite thing about living up north in the winter? 

Wildlife! Hands down! I also enjoy skiing and snowshoeing. It’s so beautiful here in the winter! 

Do you have a favorite winter holiday tradition? 

Eating all the incredible Scandinavian treats my grandma makes. 

If you were to give your mom one thing from the shop, what would you choose?

A Luci Haas mug! ️ And everything else in the store. Ha!

Do YOU have a favorite “corner” at The Big Lake?

I love the cards! Also, whatever corner the Koselig candles are in. 

When I see a package has arrived from ______________________ I can barely contain myself :-) 

New pottery and fun cards! 

What’s your favorite part about working at The Big Lake? 

I haven’t been at tbl long but... the people. The incredible people I work with and the amazing people that come in to shop. What a warm and welcoming place.
